Some quick reviews of what I’ve been consuming…
“The Mermaid Chair”-Broadcast on the Lifetime channel, this made for TV movie stars Kim Basinger as a women who, upon returning to her childhood island home for a family crisis, faces not only family secrets dredged up from the past, but also the danger of forbidden love, as well as the promise of reconciliation & the forging of new beginnings. For what it was, it wasn’t bad-I enjoyed it. I’m not sure who directed, but it had a very ”Practical Magic” feel to it. I’ve seen this book in the library a number of times, and have often though to check it out, but never have. After seeing the movie, I will definitely grab it up on my next trip to the library. A good recommend if you happen to catch it on-the cable networks tend to rerun a lot of stuff, so I’m sure it will be available for the next couple weeks if you look for it. Maybe even look for a DVD release.
“Roll Bounce”-Starring Bow Wow, this fun flick is about a group of boys from the poor side of town who decide to compete in a big skate competition at a neighboring roller rink when their own home rink shuts down. The storyline takes place in the 1970’s, when disco, big collars, afros, and bell bottoms were all the rage. The sound score is awesome and the skating is amazing. If you’re a child of the seventies & early eighties, you’ll definitely enjoy this movie. Currently on HBO, I’m not sure if this film is available as a rental just yet, but I would imagine so. A great recommend-this film will make you wanna dance!
“In Her Shoes”-A drama starring Cameron Diaz, Shirley McLaine, and Toni Collette, this film tells the story of sisters and the often tangled relationship between them; the differences that divide them as well as the shared experiences that are the glue holding them together. A cute film I definitely enjoyed watching! Currently available on HBO, this would also make a nice rental. I would recommend this primarily as a chick flick, however Craig watched it with me, and enjoyed it as well.
Laurell K. Hamilton’s “A Kiss of Shadows,” and “A Caress of Twilight”-Within the pages of these first two books in Hamilton’s “Meredith Gentry” series, we meet not only the main character, Merry, but also a whole bevy of Otherworldly characters, all living in modern day America. Merry is co-heir to the throne of the Unseelie Fae, and though previously prodigal, she has returned to the court and given a task upon which her future queenship resides. With danger of assassination lurking about every corner, Merry strives to complete her mission, along with the help of several of her Guards. Filled with magic & mystery, this series is a must for any lover of urban fantasy. I am devouring these books, and have heard from many fans that that’s how most Hamilton readers react to her writing. I’m currently in the middle of the 3rd book, “Seduced by Moonlight” and hope to be on the fourth by the weekend. Several women have recommended Hamilton to me, both the Meredith Gentry series as well as the Anita Blake series, and I have to say I’m not sure why I waited so long to start reading her-she is a very talented writer. I have yet to begin the Blake series, but I do have the first one, “Guilty Pleasures,” on my desk and ready to go!
Something I would be amiss not to mention is that while lots of women readers have recommended Hamilton’s works to me, not once have they ever mentioned anything about the sex. Not once! *grinchuckle* There is a lot of it. *nods* Now, I can’t speak for certain about the Blake series as I haven’t read it yet, but the Gentry series has tons of happy, glowy, shiny faerie sex. Is the sex some big secret we’re not supposed to talk about? *giggles* Am I letting the cat out of the bag? Uh-oh. Suffice it to say, it does make for interesting reading!
An amazing recommend if you’re a fan of modern fantasy! Read this author!!
