Late last night, several hours after I had posted my last post concerning Lonelygirl15, I began to think a lot about privacy, and the ramifications of putting yourself out there on the ‘net. Now, we would assume that since Jessica Rose is an actress, and did take on this project knowingly, it could probably go without saying that she knew what she was getting into & that she was well aware of the possibilities of being “found out.” However, isn’t it slightly bizarre that there are people out there who don’t even know Jessica Rose, myself included, and yet have this girl’s resume and personal pictures plastered on their blogs for the world to see? For a rising young actress, I’m sure this kind of financially free publicity is awesome-she has the world wide web buzzing with curiosity-but at what cost to her privacy?
Let’s play devil’s advocate, shall we?
What if the situation had gone a little differently? What if Jessica had not been an actress, but was instead just what she had claimed to be? How frightening for a young girl to suddenly be “investigated” by hundreds of amateur “sleuths” all eager to find out the “truth” behind her secrets, and the things she did not say. Would these same people who are posting her resume now, be posting her home address & phone number? I would like to say no-I know I wouldn’t have taken it that far-but there are people out there who would; just as there are people out there who would use that information to further their own sick desires & twisted fantasies. There is definitely a potential for danger-every stalker, pedophile, and nutcase would be hot on the trail. How would this impact her day to day life? Obviously her parents would be angry with her, but wouldn’t they also be very much anxious and worried about her safety? They would undoubtedly also be very angry with those willing to take advantage of an innocent young girl. Can you say “lawsuit?” And for those few willing to take things several immoral steps farther-can you say “jail time? Of less concern than their daughter’s life and continued well-being, privacy issues & risks concerning the entire family such as identity theft, credit card fraud, as well as the outing of any skeletons in the closet could potentially be a scary reality. What would need to be done to ensure the safety, as well as protect the privacy, of “Bree” and her entire family? Would there be any way to fix the situation beyond moving to another area & changing names and account numbers and any other vital info, not to mention grounding poor “Bree” from the computer for life??
Now obviously I’ve taken a bit of artistic license with my version of “what could have been.” Maybe though, we should all really think about just how much we could possibly sacrifice by throwing so much of ourselves online.
As for Lonelygirl15 & Jessica Rose, I hope this does for her acting career what she would like it to do, and I wish her the best of luck in all endeavors. I will continue to watch the LG15 dramarama on youtube as I’m interested in seeing where they take things now, however, I have to say that knowing what lies beneath kind of makes the story a lot less exciting & mysterious. Kinda like sneaking to open your presents days before Xmas because you just can’t wait, and then when the big day finally arrives, the feelings of excitement & anticipation aren’t there because you already know what you’re getting. You’ve ruined it for yourself.
